The capital city of Congo, Brazzaville, welcomes 10 of the best womens team from across the African continent as the 23rd edition of the CAHB Womens African Championship throws-off today (Sunday 2 December).

The tournament starts with two preliminary groups of five teams each with the top four teams in both going through to the quarter-finals and then a straight knock-out format up to deciding the winners on Wednesday 12 December.

Preliminary Group A sees Tunisia (TUN), Cameroon (CMR), Cote dIvoire (CIV), Senegal (SEN) and Algeria (ALG) take on each other, while Group B features hosts Congo (CGO), Angola (ANG), DR Congo (COD), Guinea (GUI) and Morocco (MAR).

The Republic of Congo is a great country that excels in the organisation of sporting events and we all know that it is the cradle of the African Games, said CAHB President Mansourou Aremou ahead of the tournament.

The championship will be embraced by the Congolese people, thanks to a perfect organisation in order to make the event, a popular festival, accessibility to all and allowing Africa to live an unforgettable competition.

The African Cup of Nations is a legacy to grow. This flagship event should serve as a lever for Congolese Handball but also for potential partners, to multiply initiatives to popularise even more our discipline.

I would like to sincerely thank the Congolese authorities, the Congolese Handball Federation and all those who, from near and far, are doing what is necessary to offer delegations the best organisational experience and to confirm Brazzaville's reputation for excellence, by putting handball at the heart of a fraternal and solidarity celebration.

Angola are the current title holders of the competition, winning the 2016 edition on home soil.
