Late last month, the Millennium Hotel and Convention Centre in Salmiya, Kuwait, held the draw for the four groups which make up the preliminary round.

Teams play each other in the initial round before the competition turns into a knockout/placement format with the winners of the competition qualifying through to the 2019 IHF Super Globe, to be held in Saudi Arabia.

The 21st edition was initially scheduled to take place in Amman, Jordan, from 10-23 November 2018, but was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances and ahead of the draw event both Naft-o-Gaz (Iran) and Al Najma (Bahrain), who competed at the previous edition, withdrew.

The 20th edition of the championship was held back in November 2017, in Hyderabad, India, with Al Najma from Bahrain winning.
