After the IHF.info announcement a year ago about changes to the IHF Trophy going forward, starting with the men’s competition, the new format in the women’s competition makes its debut later this month in Niamey, Niger.

The ever-popular and successful IHF Trophy is an integral and important competition which forms a large part of the IHF mission to grow and develop the game of handball around the world.

The competition gives the opportunity to emerging and developing countries around the world to play in continental and intercontinental international competitions, as well as providing workshops for training and the further development of coaches and referees.

Nations from Africa, Asia, Europe, Pan America and Oceania will take part throughout each competition cycle, consisting initially of zonal competitions within the continent and the respective winners then progressing through to a continental championship.

The winners of each continental championship then play off in an IHF Trophy – Intercontinental Championship.

Both age ranges for IHF Trophy competitions have also been fully integrated into the IHF Calendar with the men’s and women’s competitions alternating each year, having started with the men’s competitions last year (2018) and the women starting this year (2019).

2019 – a chance for regional and global glory
The IHF Trophy – Junior Competition will be for players born in 2000 and younger, while the IHF Trophy – Youth Competition will be for players born in 2002 and younger.

In addition to expanding the reach of age ranges, the winners of the 2019 IHF Trophy – Intercontinental Championship – for junior teams only – has been upgraded to a qualification event for the 2020 IHF Women’s Junior World Championship, set to take place in Romania.

As usual, the IHF will be organising a coaching course during each IHF Trophy competition and as part of the continued support for developing handball nations, the IHF will also cover the travel expenses of all teams to the competition venues.
